When I was reading up on using magnesium chloride flakes for my Magicalm Footspray, I saw a few posts on using magnesium as a deodorant. I have been trying it for a month, and it seems to work, by both adjusting the pH and drying the underarm area.
Natural deodorants
All natural deodorants work by adjusting the skin microbiome so that odour-producing bacteria can't survive rather than just masking the smell with chemical fragrances.
The science behind magnesium chloride is that it changes the pH of your skin from acid to alkaline which means the bacteria that cause body odour can't survive.
Magnesium chloride is also hygroscopic, i.e. it attracts water so it absorbs moisture as you sweat so you will feel dry for longer as the magnesium dissolves.
Skin pH
Your skin is naturally acidic with the pH sitting between 4.5 and 5.75. This acidity helps maintain the skin's barrier function and protects against harmful microbes.
The underarm usually has a pH of around 5.5-6.5, which is less acidic than other parts of your skin which is why it harbours different bacteria.
Natural solutions
You can either lower the pH using apple cider vinegar or lemon juice (pH between 2.5 and 3.0) or increase it with sodium bicarbonate which has a pH of 9, or magnesium chloride which in solution typically has a pH around 6 to 7.
The pH determines the type of bacteria that live on your skin, so adjusting the pH means the odour - causing bacteria cannot survive.

Zechstein magnesium
Zechstein magnesium is 100% natural and unrefined, and is considered the world's purest magnesium chloride. It is non-toxic, but some people may experience irritation, especially if they have sensitive skin.
People who are sensitive to bi-carb, should find a magnesium spray less irritating than baking soda or some traditional deodorants.
How to use
- Spray area with 1 or 2 sprays after showering and let it dry for a few minutes before dressing
- Do not spray immediately after shaving
- It may sting/tingle or itch on application, (especially if you are magnesium deficient) but this should subside with regular use.
- If you find it too drying, you can moisturise with an oil or skin serum, like my Emollient Botannica or pair with the NOBICO DEO to add in the benefits of coconut oil, arrowroot and odour busting essential oils.
Our bodies are all different which is why I offer a 100% money back guarantee if you are not completely satisfied with any products.
I have diluted the Magiclear spray to make the application more comfortable. but you should discontinue use if any of these occur.
- Rash
- Hives
- Itching
- Redness
- Blisters
If you experience any of these symptoms, gently wash it off of your skin and consult your doctor for advice
Can you have too much magnesium?
Yes, you can, but your body will usually tell you and you would get "loose stools" if you have overdone the magnesium.
The body usually gets rid of extra magnesium through urine, but taking too much magnesium can cause diarrhea, nausea, and muscle weakness.
Certain groups, including people with kidney disease, are at higher risk for getting too much magnesium. Certain medications may also interact with magnesium including antibiotics, diuretics and Bisphosphonates (used for osteoporosis).
